Smartix uses a simple credit system

Each action uses a small number of credits, and you can choose how you want to buy them.

You can also create and interact with TEST passes without any fee. TEST passes are identical to LIVE passes but have a expiry date 48 hours after issue.

There are no limits on the number of test passes that you can create. So trialing Smartix, developing new pass templates and trying out your new passes can all be done without incurring any fees

Run Smartix at Small Scale with 200 FREE credits to spend each month

You can also use Smartix with real customers using free monthly credits. This supports light, real-world usage such as small deployments or early-stage rollouts.

Free credits are designed for light usage and will not support larger-scale deployments.

Boutique Loyalty Programme

A small boutique store can support around 30 customer return visits per month, such as collecting or redeeming points. As more customers join, free credits still allow light engagement and occasional updates or notifications.

School or Community Events

A school or local group can issue around 40-50 digital tickets for events such as plays, fundraisers or clubs. Basic updates and reminders can also be managed within the free credit allowance.

Gift Cards and Promotions

A small shop can issue around 15-20 digital gift cards per month, depending on whether updates or notifications are used. This makes it ideal for testing campaigns or running small-scale promotions without upfront cost.

How credits are used

Credits are used when creating, updating, and interacting with our standard passes. Bulk actions are more efficient and use fewer credits per pass.

For example, if you wish to send the same notification to mulitple passes, then the cost per pass is lower than notifying them individually..

Managed Passes

In addition to standard passes, Smartix offers Managed Passes. These work with our Scan App to provide an out-of-the-box solution for programmes such as loyalty and stamp cards.

Pricing depends on both the pass type and the action performed. For example, credit actions add loyalty points or stamps, while debit actions represent customers redeeming them.

We don’t charge to issue managed loyalty or stamp cards. Instead, charges apply only once customers actively use them (verify), so you pay based on real engagement rather than distribution.

Common questions about billing and credits

Q. How does pricing work?

Smartix uses a simple credit system. Each action, such as creating, updating, or notifying a pass, uses a small number of credits.

You can either buy credits as needed (pay-as-you-go), or choose a monthly plan for lower rates if you use Smartix regularly.

Q. What actions use credits?

Credits are used when you interact with passes. For example creating a pass, updating it, or sending notifications.

Bulk actions are more efficient and use fewer credits per pass, helping reduce costs at scale.

Q. What’s the difference between test passes and live passes?

Test passes are free and are designed for building and testing your templates.

You can create, update, and interact with test passes without using any credits. Test passes automatically expire after 48 hours.

Live passes are any passes issued for real use. These do not expire and are charged based on the actions performed, as described in the pricing above.

Q. Should I choose pay-as-you-go or a monthly plan?

Pay-as-you-go is ideal if your usage is occasional or unpredictable.

Monthly plans are better suited to regular or high-volume usage, offering lower credit rates in exchange for a minimum monthly spend.

Q. Do my credits expire?

No. Credits do not expire. Once purchased, they remain on your account until you use them.

Q. What happens if I run out of credits?

If your credit balance reaches zero, you can continue using Smartix within your available overdraft.

The overdraft amount is based on your most recent credit purchase and allows you to temporarily go into a negative balance. This is automatically settled the next time you add credits.

Once your overdraft limit is reached, certain actions will be paused until credits are added.

You can enable auto top-up to automatically purchase credits when your balance gets low, helping avoid any interruption to your service.

Q. Is it cheaper to update multiple passes at once?

Yes. Bulk updates are more efficient and use fewer credits per pass than updating each pass individually.

Where possible, we recommend using bulk updates to reduce costs.

Q. How are loyalty or stamp cards charged?

We don’t charge to issue loyalty or stamp cards, and you can add points or stamps at the time of issue at no cost.

Credits are only used when a customer returns and interacts with the pass at a later date. For example adding more points or redeeming rewards.

This means you only pay when there is genuine, ongoing engagement.

Q. Do I need my own Apple or Google certificates?

It depends on how you plan to use Smartix.

For pay-as-you-go accounts, you have three options:

• Use shared certificates at no cost : Limited to 1 update or notification per pass per day

• Use a Smartix private certificate (fee applies) : limited to 3 updates or notifications per pass per day

• Provide your own certificates : limited to 24 updates or notifications per pass per day (Although Apple/Google may throttle your use below this limit)

For monthly contract plans, you must provide your own certificates. There are no update/notification limits.

Q. Is API access included?

API access is available as an optional paid feature for pay-as-you-go accounts.

It is included as standard with monthly contract plans.

Q. What happens if a payment fails?

If a payment cannot be processed, we’ll let you know and guide you through the next steps.

Depending on the feature, access may be temporarily paused until the issue is resolved, but you can restore full access quickly once payment is completed.

Q. Do I receive any free credits?

Yes. Pay-as-you-go accounts receive a monthly free credit top-up.

On your monthly billing anniversary, if your balance is below 200 credits, it will be topped up to 200 at no cost.

For example: • If you have 25 credits, you’ll be topped up to 200 • If you have 300 credits, no top-up is applied that month

This ensures you always have a small balance available for light usage or testing.
